OUR Story

Our history dates back to 1935

SERVING THE PEOPLE OF BARNSLEY SINCE 1935.

The legacy of Two Gates Fisheries began in 1935 with two bothers; Douglas Saunders (born 1909) and Roland Saunders (born 1916).

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Douglas and Roland ran Two Gates Fisheries until Roland was called to fight in the second world war; Douglas had a hernia therefore he remained at home. Roland fought on the Normandy Front and was commended for his efforts during the war.

When news came that Douglas needed assistance, Roland returned to Shafton to help his brother run the fish and chip shop.

THE SECOND WORLD WAR

WE’RE STRIVING to BECOME CARBON NEUTRAL

PRESENT DAY

In 2017, Craig Butcher, the current owner, purchased the shop and has developed it ever since from not doing particularly well to a successful business. We are working with the council on their net zero scheme and plan to fit new energy efficient tech.

The average chippy tea delivery in the UK has a daily carbon footprint of 5,160 tonnes which is equivalent to 110 flights between London and Paris every day! On our mission to becoming carbon neutral, our shop now has solar panels and uses an electric vehicle to deliver approximately 85% of our fish and chips.

SUSTAINABILITY

Not only do we strive to be carbon neutral, we also strive to be sustainable. Being members of the Marine Stewardship Council, we only use sustainable suppliers for our fish and potatoes.

Our fish is caught fresh from Whitby and prepared by high quality supplier, Dennis Crooks Fish Merchants - who ensure only the tastiest and cleanest cuts of fish are sent out to us.

All of our menu items are served in cardboard boxes and paper bags, making our packaging easy to recycle.
