Supporting the Local Community on National Fish and Chip Day

To honour the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, as well as National Fish and Chip Day, we’re bringing the community together with the nation’s favourite dish.

During Covid, we delivered 100 portions of fish ‘n’ chips to Countrywide Healthcare, a medical supplies company for care homes, working around the clock. Our fish ‘n’ chips helped boost staff morale! This year, we had the pleasure of serving the hardworking team, at Countrywide Healthcare, again. Hand delivered by Craig, the owner himself, 100 members of staff enjoyed a delicious chippy lunch.

We also held a raffle in store, for £1 a ticket our customers had the chance of winning a free chippy! All proceeds were donated to Help 4 Homeless Veterans. Together, our community raised a total of £100.

Some fish ‘n’ chip history:

  • During the war, fish and chips were called ‘good companions’ by Winston Churchill, who ensured they weren’t rationed as he felt it would be detrimental to the morale of the nation.

  • During the D-Day landings, soldiers who found themselves behind enemy lines at night and needed a way of telling whether someone nearby was a friend or foe - they devised a two-word code… one would call ‘FISH’, the other replied ‘CHIPS’.

  • Our own war hero: Roland, one of our founders, was called to fight in the Second World War. He fought Normandy Front and was commended for his efforts. He returned home to help his brother, Douglas, run Two Gates Fisheries, which they founded in 1935.
